Join in and Walk On

Health Walks that mix reading with walking have been launched in Fife.

Woodland Walk for Walk On

With our support via the Scottish Health Walk Network and with funding from our Smarter Choices, Smarter Places Open Fund, the Walk On project offers walks that leave from local libraries.

These library walks combine walking and reading, two activities known to have a positive affect on mental health.

By going on regular group Health Walks, Walk On hope that participants will improve their mental and physical wellbeing, learn more about their local area and build confidence in walking more for local short journeys.

We were delighted to join the new group recently, setting out from Duloch Library in Dunfermline for a lovely woodland walk followed by a cuppa, a poem, and a chat about books and reading in a safe, welcoming environment.

I'd like to thank the On Fife team for starting the Walk On initiative. My mother and I have enjoyed meeting new people and seeing parts of the town that we've never seen before. Even though we've lived there for over 20 years.
It gives me a reason to get out of the house. I have had problems with depression and anxiety for years and due to recent health problems have become more lonely stuck at home.

Walk On gives me an activity where I can keep mobile but also the company of other people to talk to.
The warm cup of tea and book club talk after the walk are an extra benefit. The library is one of the few places I feel comfortable going to due to my anxiety problems.

You can find out information on all the WalkON library walks here.

Next month the regular WalkON groups will be walking Mindfully as part of Fife Cultural Trusts ‘Ways to Wellbeing’ festival which has a number of events focussing on health and Wellbeing during May. Find out more.
