Positive Steps Kemnay offers opportunities for adults of all ages and abilities to take part in a walking activity. As the name suggests, we offer walking opportunities for people living in Kemnay & District.
Positive Steps Kemnay is an independent community group with Scottish Charitable status. We have strong links with Paths for All and are a member of the Scottish Health Walks Network.
Our health walks are based around the town of Kemnay, which is blessed with many walks both in the village and the surrounding woodlands. The health walks are normally around 45-60 minutes, and these are supported by two trained walk leaders. We also offer a shorter, gentler walk (approx. 20 - 30 minutes depending on abilities) that is also supported by two trained walk leaders. All these walks end up in the Community Café where tea, coffee and home bakes are much enjoyed.
Kemnay Kestrels (part of the Grampian 50+ Network) are also an integral part of Positive Steps Kemnay. They walk on a weekly basis and go further afield and have longer walks. Positive Steps Kemnay offers an inclusive service for our walkers. Throughout the year we organise Strength & Balance groups, which introduce a series of simple exercises designed to help reduce the risk of trips and falls, followed by a gentle walk and coffee. These are supported by four trained walk leaders. These take place on a monthly basis but this is augmented twice a year by four weekly sessions.
We are a Dementia Friendly accredited project, meaning our walks are accessible to people living with dementia. We are also Macmillan Friendly, so are able to welcome those affected by cancer to join us on our walks. Some of our walk leaders have done Disability Inclusion training and we are taking part in Grampian Disability Sport's Get Out Get Active (GOGA) project.
The most unique aspect of Positive Steps Kemnay is our 'ladder' system; by which we mean that it is easy for walkers to move between our various walking groups depending on their health and abilities. For example, somebody who has been ill may first start off in the Strength & Balance group, then feeling stronger may join the Gentle Walking group and possibly will join the Health Walking group. Any number of combinations are possible and are encouraged.
